Section 2 of the Schedule to the Education (Welfare) Act, 2000 sets out the composition of the National Educational Welfare Board. The following is the current membership of the Board:

The Board of the NEWB holds 9 formal meetings each year. The Board also has a number of committees that meet individually a number of times a year. Outlined below is an overview of each committee’s function and details of who attends.
1. Communications Committee
Terms of Reference
To advise the Board on the development and implementation of its communication strategy and to consider other matters that may be referred to the Committee from time to time.
2. Research Committee
Terms of Reference
To advise the Board on its research function; to develop and oversee the implementation of its research programme; and to advise on other matters that may be referred to the Committee from time to time.
3. Education Committee
Terms of Reference
To advise the Board on matters relating to education and schools generally and other issues that may be referred to it from time to time
4. Internal Audit Committee
Terms of Reference
The role of the Committee is to provide an independent appraisal function with the NEWB to measure and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of its internal control and governance procedures and financial reporting systems. The Committee will, through the commissioning of audit reports and reviews, furnish the NEWB and executive with analysis, appraisals, recommendations and relevant information concerning the organisation's internal control and governance systems. As part of the organisation assurance systems, the Committee relies on the expertise and knowledge of the executive, the internal audit function and the external auditors in carrying out their oversight responsibilities.
